In Washington today our business economy continues to lead the country – especially in the area of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers and employers. Our state ranks 1^st in the concentration of STEM jobs, 1^st in the creation of software companies and 4^th in technology-based corporations. And, the state is expected to continue to expand jobs in the STEM arena by 25 percent in the next six years.

Yet, our education system does not lead the nation. Today, in Washington, 1 of 4 high school students do not graduate. Of those that move on to a two-or four-year university, half will require remediation. With projections that 70 percent of jobs in Washington will require an education beyond high school by 2020 – this increases to 94 percent of jobs in STEM fields – our state must do more to prepare all students for college and work.

This is why a group of parents, families, teachers, principals, community members and advocates, called Excellent Schools Now, created A+ Washington, a comprehensive plan to transform our state’s education system.

A+ Washington builds on many laws, policies and programs that are already helping students succeed here and in communities across the county and in Washington state. A+ Washington offers solutions and big ideas that add up to a bright future- where every student gets what they need to succeed in work, college and life – solutions focused around five areas: quality pre-kindergarten for every child, supporting excellent teachers for all students, preparing all students for work and college, flexibility to transform schools, and accurate measurements and data so schools and teachers can be held accountable for their students' performance.

On June 15, the Excellent Schools Now Coalition will lead a discussion on A+ Washington, share ideas and strategies that will help ensure all students graduate from high school prepared to succeed at careers and college.

His company, FastCap, launches approximately 20 new innovative products per year and has won business of the year in 1999 and 2010. Paul and his wife, Leanne, have built FastCap from their garage into a multi-million dollar company in 13 years.

Join us to learn about the brand-new Innovation Center and how technology is transforming our healthcare system. Presented by Marc Pierson, MD, Regional Vice President, Quality and Clinical Information at PeaceHealth

Marc is board-certified in Internal Medical and Emergency Medicine. He completed medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine in 1976 and his residency in Internal Medicine at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, TX in 1979. He practiced Emergency Medicine in Bellingham from 1980 until 1997 when he joined the executive team at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center. As a member of the executive team, Marc is responsible for supporting Clinical Operational Quality Improvement, Information Systems & Community Health Record, Whatcom Health Information Network (HInet) and laboratory services. Marc's real passion in work is clinical quality improvement across the continuum of care. Medical informatics and knowledge management are continuing areas of learning. He enjoys his three daughters, Aileido, sailing, kayaking and motorcycle riding.
